The Barnhill Development at Chipping Sodbury
Local developer, Chelverton Deeley Freed, has submitted an outline planning application to South Gloucestershire Council, bringing plans for a mixed-use development at the former Barnhill Quarry site in Chipping Sodbury a significant step forward.
The submission follows three rounds of extensive consultation with local people and stakeholders. The latest development proposals featuring a Waitrose foodstore, direct pedestrian link to and from the High Street, and some 190 dwellings, were warmly welcomed by the majority of those attending a two day exhibition held in February 2010, with some 67% of individuals responding in support of the principle of developing the site.
It is anticipated that the development will help bring significant benefits to the local community including improved shopping facilities, new employment opportunities with the potential to generate up to 160 jobs within the foodstore alone, and much needed housing from starter homes through to family houses, including a proportion of affordable housing.
Commenting on the application, Paddy Fox, Director of Chelverton Deeley Freed, said: “We have spent considerable time over the last three years consulting with the local community, as we want to ensure that this development will have a positive impact on those who live and work in Chipping Sodbury. From the start we were acutely aware that any development in this area would need to take into account the unique landscape of the area and the character of the town, and above all the needs and aspirations of the local community. The project team have engaged fully in the consultation process, and have refined the designs along the way to create a very exciting scheme masterplan.”
Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen, added: "Waitrose has been working hard with the project team to ensure our store will be an appropriate addition to the town, sensitively designed and best able to meet the needs of the local community. The store will strengthen the health and vitality of Chipping Sodbury Town Centre as both residents and those from further afield will easily be able to combine a visit to our new store with a trip to the High Street and its independent retailers. We will be located within very easy walking distance of established facilities.”
If planning permission is granted, construction is likely to start in Autumn 2011 with the
first phase of development, including the foodstore, due for completion in 2012.
